Disseminated Rash Accompanied by Abdominal Symptoms

An 84-year-old African American woman is hospitalized for episodes of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea of 3 days’ duration, along with a disseminated pruritic rash. She is being treated for urethral dilation, chronic renal failure with a renal mass of unknown significance, and gouty nephropathy. Her medical history includes hypertension, diabetes, COPD, and sickle cell anemia. By day six of hospitalization, this rash had evolved from pruritic to vesicular.
