Sounding Out Arthritis #5: Ultrasound-Guided Hip Injection

Video

Here Dr. DeMarco shows how to guide an injection of the hip using ultrasound. The trick is training yourself to identify the femoral neck and head and the trochanter, and then rotating the sensor to reveal the orientation of that particular joint, beneath all that tissue.

In this episode of the Sounding Out Arthritis series, Dr. DeMarco guides you through the process of inserting a surgical needle into the hip joint for an injection.

First, using a skeleton for clarity of anatomy, he demonstrates how to orient the probe in order to determine the features of the joint and its orientation (coxa vera, coxa valga, or normal).

Next, with a series of slides and videos, you watch what appears on the monitor during an actual procedure and how it relates to the injection procedure.
