Drug and Nondrug Approaches for Treating Osteoarthritis

Updated treatment guidelines for hand, hip and knee osteoarthritis have been issued. In this slideshow, we highlight recommendations for the use (or not) of drug and nondrug treatments. These include strong recommendations for standard treatment options, such as weight loss and Tai Chi, and strong recommendations against treatments with pharmacologicals, such as glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate (except for hand osteoarthritis). The American College of Rheumatology, in conjunction with the Arthritis Foundation, have issued updated treatment guidelines for osteoarthritis of the hand, hip and knee. In this slideshow, we highlight their recommendations for the use-or not-of drug and nondrug treatments that have been tested in clinical trials. These include strong recommendations for standard treatment options, such as weight loss and Tai Chi, and strong recommendations against treatments with pharmacologicals, such as glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate (except for hand osteoarthritis).
