In this installment of our psoriatic arthritis quiz, we focus on features associated with the five types of psoriatic arthritis. Can you identify all types of psoriatic arthritis and address how best to treat each condition?

What are the five forms of psoriatic arthritis?
1. Asymmetric oligoarticular
2. Symmetric polyarthritis
3. Distal interphalangeal predominant
4. Psoriatic spondylitis
5. Arthritis mutilans

Asymmetric oligoarticular and symmetric polyarthritis are the most common forms of psoriatic arthritis. Asymmetric oligoarticular involves different joints on each side of the body, while the symmetric polyarthritis form affects the same joints on each side. Any joint in the body can be affected.Asymmetric oligoarticular and symmetric polyarthritis are the most common forms of psoriatic arthritis. Primarily the fingers and toes. Since distal interphalangeal joints are closest to the nails, nail changes are common in this type of arthritis.

Peripheral arthritis and axial disease in psoriatic arthritis are not unusual in PsA, but isolated spondylitis occurs in less than 5 percent of cases. Inflammatory axial disease in PsA can be indistinguishable from ankylosing spondylitis. In one observational study of psoriatic arthritis patients, 24 percent of patients met the diagnostic criteria for both psoriatic spondyloarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Other PsA patients with spinal disease may be asymptomatic as only 45 percent experience inflammatory back or neck symptoms. However, an ankylosing spondylitis diagnosis requires the presence of inflammatory back pain or limited range of motion.

Severe inflammation that destroys joints and bone tissue in the feet and hands. Fingers may appear very thin near the nail, but thick and fat near the hand. Affected joints may fuse and no longer bend, move or straighten and may shorten over time leading to loose skin in affected areas.
