An Italian study detects a high prevalence of inflammatory abnormalities in the knee joints of older adults, usually absent clinical signs of osteoarthritis.

Two new analyses throw cold water on the usefulness of acetaminophen for osteoarthritis or back pain, and of steroid shots for knee osteoarthritis.

Prompt action by Alabama rheumatologists has caused Blue Cross Blue Shield to rethink a policy denying all claims for injections into knees with osteoarthritis. But a similar "ban" on hyaluronic acid in neighboring Florida takes effect today.

A second biomarker panel shows promise in distinguishing osteoarthritis from rheumatoid arthritis early enough to prevent joint damage. This one relies partly on lack of antibody response to citrullinated proteins in early osteoarthritis.

(AAOS2015) Evidence from large insurance databases shows that knee replacement often quickly follows arthroscopy or injections. It would make (economic and clinical) sense to go straight to surgery, the researchers contend.

(AAOS2015) Total knee replacements appear successful for the relatively young and active as well as for those over 90. For people with the most preoperative pain, however, they may not help at all.
